Chapter Seven

Juniper

December 23rd…

“I’m so pathetic,” I mumble to myself for…hell, I’ve said it too many times since the party I’ve lost track.

“Don’t talk about my best friend that way,” Val admonishes me. I’ve been staying with her since I ran from the laurels, and Milo, in tears. I couldn’t go back to that house and face them, knowing they were only getting started that night.

“When I looked up and saw that mistletoe, after what I let him do, the promises he made,” I admit, unable to keep going as my throat closes up due to the emotions clogging it.

“Junie, you’re forgetting the fact that he did make them. That has to mean something. I know you were surprised by the mistletoe, but think back…was he?” I can recall that whole situation instantly as I continually relive it, even to the point it keeps me up at night.

Visualizing us seeing each other for the first time, the “it’s you,” he’d said, his tone close to reverence, the way he made love to me even though what we did could only be called fucking, and his face when he saw the mistletoe above us.

“What did I do?” I whisper in agony.

“Those bitches took advantage of your insecurities, which they helped cultivate, because they’re jealous shrews. If I looked better in orange…” she trails off, making me smile.

“Like you’d let that stop you.”

“Of course not. Besides, I rock orange like very few can,” she smirks, though she’s not lying. My girl can pull it off. It’s why I designed her a dress in that very color for Halloween a couple months ago for a bash she attended.

“I have too much baggage. He doesn’t need that. Maybe I did us both a favor by leaving. My sisters just gave me the reason to do what I should’ve as soon as I realized I wasn’t in there alone.” Val is shaking her head, telling me if I had that much baggage, I wouldn’t have been so light on my feet. “You’re a dork,” I inform her, though I’m laughing all the same. “I needed that,” I confess.

“It sounds like the two of you need each other.”

“How do I find him?”

“Well, they,” she states, referring to Annabelle and Penelope, “did give you a clue. Crap, I hate admitting they might’ve been helpful,” Val adds with a shudder. “Probably the first time that’s ever happened.”

“Oh, the jab about the highest bidder?” That still smarts. The size of a man’s bank account may decide how far their legs open, but not mine. They stayed firmly shut until I saw the size of Milo’s heart.

“What was that sigh for?”

“I should’ve never doubted him. The things he said, I know he meant all of them, but I threw them in his face as if they were worthless.”

“That’s not fair to you.”

“But it doesn’t negate the fact I did.” She doesn’t disagree that time.
